Chiefs in Ontario gather for Special Chiefs Assembly

(THUNDER BAY, ON) November 25, 2013 – Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy will welcome the 133 Chiefs from across Ontario this week as the Chiefs of Ontario host a Special Chiefs Assembly November 26, 27, 28 in Fort William First Nation.

The three-day Chiefs Assembly will include discussions on a number of topics such as the overall strategic plan, impacts of funding reductions, and updates on health, justice, economic development, education, environment, youth and social services as they relate to First Nations in Ontario.

Also high on the agenda will be the rejection of the federal government’s proposed First Nation Education Act by First Nations in Ontario.

Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn Atleo will also address the Chiefs in attendance on the final day.

“I am looking forward to the discussion by our leadership on these very important issues,” said Regional Chief Stan Beardy. “This is an important meeting where we receive guidance and direction by the Chiefs in assembly on how to proceed with these priorities.”

The Chiefs of Ontario is a political forum and a secretariat for collective decision making, action, and advocacy for the 133 First Nation communities located within the boundaries of the province of Ontario, Canada.
