Student group creates event to remember women lost to violence

Abuse prevention monthBy Marci Becking

TIMMINS – Students enrolled in the Social Services Worker Program at Northern College are organizing an event on November 28 – remembering women who have lost their lives to violence.

“We chose the topic ‘Violence against Women’ for our Community Organization and Development assignment,” says Roxanne Recollet who is one of five students doing this initiative.  “The purpose of the assignment is to create awareness of an issue that our community faces.  We decided to have a moment of silence at 11:28 am on November 28 to remember those women who have lost their lives to violence.”

November is Woman Abuse Prevention month for Ontario and the group – which also includes Lynn Thompson, Maxine Wemigwans, Mandy Moloney and Chelsy Kitchener– has also created a Facebook event page.

“We will post statistics regarding abuse against women and any other information that might help those who suffer in silence,” says Recollet.

The student group is asking people to spread the word about their November 28th event.
