DOKIS FIRST NATION – The Dokis Health Centre held a North American Indigenous Games celebration on Oct. 29 by showcasing NAIG medal winners Trena Restoule and Grace Racicot in a ‘Just Move It’ event at the Robert Restoule Memorial Athletic Facility.

At NAIG held in Regina this past July, Trena, 17, won five medals in track and field:  Gold in 100 metre and 4 x 100 relay, silver in high jump and long jump and bronze in the 200 metres.  13 year-old Grace who attends Princess Ann Public School in Sudbury won a silver medal in the 4×100 relay.

Bernadette Restoule, Sandra Dokis and Sharon Goulais welcomed the community, volunteers, Grace Racicot’s family and Trena’s track coach – Richard Lachance from Northern Secondary School.

Lachance spoke to the 25 youth participants of the ‘Just Move It’ event about how one gets prepared to get into track and field competition.

“It’s a lot of hard work to get your body in proper form and many hours of training on your own,” said Lachance.  “You really have to have discipline and focus to compete.”

Trena and Grace demonstrated proper form and warm-ups.  Everyone did the warm ups before participating in different events:  jumping into the high jump mat, shot put throw, javelin throw, and running.

The activities then moved indoors to the Dokis Complex to do bean bag throws, the popular 4 x 100 relay race and finished with the parachute game.

At a dinner honouring Trena and Grace, they both spoke of their passion and pride of competing in their events and representing Dokis First Nation, Ontario and Canada.
