Lieutenant Governor to visit communities in Northern Ontario

TORONTO (July 26, 2016)–Her Honour the Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will conduct official visits to the communities of Sault Ste. Marie, Elliot Lake, Manitoulin Island, and Northern Bruce Peninsula during a tour of the region from Wednesday, July 27 to Saturday, July 30, 2016. The tour is part of Her Honour’s continuing program of travel to communities in Ontario.

Wednesday, July 27, 2016

10:20 a.m. – Unity Pact signing ceremony at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site

Parks Canada Building, 1 Canal Drive, Sault Ste. Marie

The Lieutenant Governor will deliver remarks during a ceremony marking the signing of the Unity Pact between the Anishinabeg Nation and the Port of Algoma. The ceremony will take place at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site, where the Robinson Huron Treaty was signed in 1850. The Unity Pact is a commitment to consultation and co-operation as the Port of Algoma is redeveloped. Her Honour will have an opportunity to meet the ceremony’s participants, which include chiefs of the area’s First Nations, Port of Algoma CEO Anshumali Dwivedi, Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day, and local parliamentary representatives.

12:15 p.m. – Visit to the Machine Shop at Mill Square

75 Huron Street, Sault Ste. Marie

The Lieutenant Governor will tour the Machine Shop, a repurposed arts, music, and events venue within the Mill Square, a mixed-use development located at Sault Ste. Marie’s historic Mill district. Her Honour will visit the music conservatory, innovation centre, reception hall, concert venue, and open market.

1:10 p.m. – Visit to Sault Ste. Marie City Hall

99 Foster Drive, Sault Ste. Marie

Following a courtesy call with Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Christian Provenzano, the Lieutenant Governor will join members of civil society in Sault Ste. Marie during a roundtable focusing on sustainable economic development. Her Honour will attend a private lunch hosted by the mayor.

2:50 p.m. – Visit to the Art Gallery of Algoma

10 East Street, Sault Ste. Marie

The Lieutenant Governor will tour the Art Gallery of Algoma, during which she will view the gallery’s collections and an exhibition exploring the history of the Group of Seven in Algoma. Her Honour will attend a reception in the company of gallery staff.

3:45 p.m. – Visit to the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre

50 Pim Street, Sault Ste. Marie

The Lieutenant Governor will tour the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. The heritage centre preserves the history of bush flying, which involves the use of unpaved runways, and forest protection in Canada. Her Honour will also tour the Northern Superior Brewing Company and Brewery Museum, located within the heritage centre’s hangar.

6 p.m. – Dinner at the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site

831 Queen Street East, Sault Ste. Marie

The Lieutenant Governor will attend a dinner hosted by the Mayor and City Council of Sault Ste. Marie at the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site. Present will be local parliamentary representatives, chiefs and representatives of the area’s First Nations, and representatives of local colleges and universities. The historic site features two old stone houses where visitors can rediscover life in the 19th century and Sault Ste. Marie’s links to the fur trade.

10 a.m. – Visit to Miners’ Memorial Park

325 King’s Highway 108, Elliot Lake

Greeted by Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella, the Lieutenant Governor will meet community members at Miners’ Memorial Park. Her Honour will tour the Mining Monument, which commemorates Elliot Lake’s mining legacy and honours workers of local miners who had been injured or killed, and the park’s boardwalk.

10:30 a.m. – Visit to Elliot Lake City Hall

45 Hillside Drive North, Elliot Lake

Following a courtesy call with the Mayor of Elliot Lake, the Lieutenant Governor will join representatives of the development community during a roundtable focusing on local initiatives. Her Honour will then attend a private lunch hosted by the mayor and city council.

1 p.m. – Visit to the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre

255 King’s Highway 108, Elliot Lake

The Lieutenant Governor will tour the Elliot Lake Nuclear and Mining Museum, which celebrates the city’s mining heritage and former status as the Uranium Capital of the World. Her Honour will also visit the Gallery at the Centre, a co-operative art gallery currently representing 20 local artists of various media.

2 p.m. – Visit to the Fire Tower Lookout

Elliot Lake

The Lieutenant Governor will tour the Fire Tower Lookout, a popular lookout point that has been restored to its original 1950s aesthetic.

2:40 p.m. – Boat tour of Dunlop Lake

Dunlop Lake Boat Launch, Elliot Lake

Accompanied by Elliot Lake Fire Chief John Thomas, the Lieutenant Governor will take a pontoon boat tour of Dunlop Lake, a popular recreation spot for tourists and local residents.

3:45 p.m. – Visit to Sheriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary

Elliot Lake

The  Lieutenant Governor will take a walking tour of the Sheriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected habitat for birds, mammals, and reptiles located on the edge of Elliot Lake.

6:30 p.m. – Reception at the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre

The Lieutenant Governor will attend a reception hosted by the Mayor of Elliot Lake. The Elliot Lake Amateur Theatre Ensemble will perform a comedy scene, after which local musical talent will perform. Present will be local representatives and members of civil society in Elliot Lake.

 10 a.m. – Visit to the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation

15 Highway 551, M’Chigeeng

The Lieutenant Governor will tour the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, which was established in 1974 to strengthen the language and culture of the Anishinaabek Nation. Her Honour will have an opportunity to meet with chiefs and elders of the United Chiefs and Councils of Mnidoo Mnising.

11:05 a.m. – Visit to the Neon Raven Art Gallery

53 Corbiere Road, M’Chigeeng

The Lieutenant Governor will visit the Neon Raven Art Gallery, which was established in 2002 to showcase the works of the acclaimed Beam family.

12:30 p.m. – Visit to the Central Manitoulin Municipal Complex

6020 Highway 542, Mindemoya

After meeting municipal councillors and staff, the Lieutenant Governor will participate in a courtesy call with Central Manitoulin Mayor Richard Stephens.

1 p.m. – Visit to Mindemoya Community Hall

The Lieutenant Governor will join mayors of other Manitoulin Island municipalities and representatives of local First Nations during a roundtable focusing on social cohesion in the community. Her Honour will then attend a reception hosted by the Mayor of Central Manitoulin. Present will be roundtable participants and staff from Central Manitoulin and other Island municipalities.

2:35 p.m. – Visit to the Central Manitoulin Welcome Centre

During a tour of the Central Manitoulin Welcome Centre, the Lieutenant Governor will meet with summer students; Ted Taylor, President of the Central Manitoulin Historical Society; and Pat Costigan, curator of XXXX Museum.

3:45 p.m. – Visit to the Mishibinijima Private Art Gallery

426 Lakeshore Road, Wikwemikong

The Lieutenant Governor will visit the Mishibinijima Private Art Gallery, which was established by artist James Simon. The gallery’s collection of paintings explores the legacy of the residential school system, Indigenous spirituality, and reconciliation.

5 p.m. – Visit to the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve

Band Administration Office, 19A Complex Drive, Wikwemikong

Greeted by Chief Duke Peltier, the Lieutenant Governor will address a gathering of community members. Her Honour will observe the presentation of a replica of the Mookamaanish Sword, which was presented by the Crown 200 years ago to thank the Wikwemikong community for its participation in the War of 1812. The replica was created by the Canadian War Museum, where the original sword currently resides with the agreement of the community. Her Honour will then attend dinner.

8:40 a.m. – Ferry ride to Tobermory

South Baymouth Ferry Terminal, 41 Water Street, South Baymouth

The Lieutenant Governor will take the 9:10 a.m. MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Tobermory. While on board, Her Honour will tour the vessel and observe interactive workshops with artist Falcon Migwans and a drumming demonstration. She will visit the on-board art gallery and the wheelhouse. Local student musicians will perform upon the ferry’s arrival in Tobermory. Northern Bruce Peninsula Mayor Milt McIver will greet Her Honour shipside.

11:20 a.m. – Visit to Bruce Peninsula National Park

Bruce Peninsula National Park, Tobermory

The Lieutenant Governor will tour the visitor centre at Bruce Peninsula National Park, after which she will attend a private lunch hosted by the Mayor of Northern Bruce Peninsula.

12:50 p.m. – Tour of Fathom Five National Marine Park

248 Big Tub Road, Tobermory

The Lieutenant Governor will take a boat tour of Fathom Five National Marine Park, a popular diving destination. Her Honour will have an opportunity to view preserved shipwrecks, lighthouses, and freshwater ecosystems.
