FedNor Invests $294,300 to support economic development activities in Temagami First Nation

Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario

TEMAGAMI FIRST NATION, ON (February 28, 2017)–A Government of Canada investment of $294,300 is helping Temagami First Nation to hire an economic development officer (EDO) for a three-year period whose priority will be to help pave the way for economic development and growth. The objective of this FedNor-funded initiative is to enable the Indigenous community to implement local economic development priorities, which will help create middle-class jobs and support sustainable growth and prosperity.

Some key activities to be undertaken by the EDO include creating an economic development corporation; developing a cultural tourism and business plan; as well as maximizing the use of the region’s natural resources, such as wood and maple syrup, to accelerate business development and growth. Provided through FedNor’s Community Investment Initiative for Northern Ontario, this targeted investment will also help the community advance its clean tech agenda, which includes a renewable energy strategy, wind farm initiative and the development of green solutions for on-reserve power generation.

Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor. Once fully implemented, this priority project is expected to diversify and grow the economy, increase tourism, create 10 new businesses and 30 full-time jobs in the community.
