What can I expect to do in this role?
The Indigenous Education Office provides ministry-wide coordination and leadership on First Nations, Métis and Inuit educational issues and initiatives, working in collaboration with Indigenous communities and organizations, Ontario school boards, post-secondary institutions, other ministries and the federal government.
Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Education Office, and managing a diverse team, you will:
- lead and manage the planning, development, research and evaluation of strategic policy initiatives
- provide expertise and advice to ministry executives, senior management and staff on policy options
- lead and direct stakeholder relations and consensus building in co-developing, promoting and delivering policies/programs
- provide leadership and guidance to professional staff engaged in a high-profile, fast-paced work environment
How do I qualify?
- You have experience managing the planning, design, development and implementation of integrated and comprehensive social policy and programs, such as Indigenous education.
- You have senior-level experience and ability to lead others in developing policy submissions and navigating government approval and decision-making processes.
- You have the ability to develop and build team capacity through positive and values-based leadership, and inclusive and engaging partnerships.
- You have the ability to determine human resources and organizational needs for optimal performance and delivery of results and alignment with ministry objectives.
- You have demonstrated senior-level experience and political acuity from working in an organization with multiple senior levels of leadership, including political leadership.
- You have the ability to manage a team of professional and administrative staff, exercising authority in the areas of organizational design, recruitment and retention, talent management, labour relations and compensation related matters.
- You have the ability to manage financial resources and reporting, including the development of multi-year budget and resource plans, transfer payment oversight including the negotiations, design and risk assessment to ensure policies adhere to ministry strategic objectives.
Indigenous knowledge and education knowledge:
- You have knowledge of Indigenous culture and issues and the government’s historic relationship with Indigenous communities, in order to respect the sensitivities and appreciate the perspectives of First Nations, Métis and Inuit leaders in dealing with the government.
- You have knowledge of First Nations, Métis and Inuit political and cultural protocols and political processes.
- You are familiar with partnerships concerning data and research of Indigenous people as outlined in the Ownership, Control, Access and Possession (OCAP) document.
- You know current and emerging issues/trends in education as they relate to Indigenous education.
- You have knowledge/understanding of Indigenous education policy directions, issues and trends to provide authoritative policy advice and lead initiatives.
Communication and interpersonal skills:
- You have superior skills in strategic planning, stakeholder management, consultation, negotiation, risk management and issues management.
- You have demonstrated superior written and oral communication skills and strong political acuity to manage sensitive, often unprecedented issues.
- You have effective interpersonal skills to build, develop and maintain positive working relationships with a wide range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- You have experience in preparing and presenting information effectively to senior management.
- You have a demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous protocols within diverse First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities and populations.
Stakeholder management skills:
- You can build and maintain strong, credible and ethical partnerships with stakeholders.
- You can provide strategic advice and make persuasive recommendations to decision-makers.
- You have the ability to support and facilitate engagement with diverse partners using anti-bias and equity inclusion practices and approaches.
Salary Range: $90,348 to $127,343 per year
