Celebrate with First Nations Public Libraries Sept. 29 – Oct. 5

First Nations Public Library Week 2019

KETTLE AND STONY POINT FIRST NATION – (September 18, 2019) – The 19th annual First Nations Public Library Week will take place in First Nation communities and libraries throughout the province from September 29 – October 5, 2019.

This year’s theme, Revitalizing Indigenous Languages, speaks to the importance of communications among First Nations peoples in their first language. The residential school system diminished Indigenous language use, therefore, a concerted effort is underway to restore and revitalize the re-acquisition of these languages. First Nation public libraries have a key role in local initiatives designed to support and strengthen Indigenous language learning. A multi-generational approach is promoted by First Nation public libraries.

The goal of First Nations Public Library Week is to gain support for the role of public libraries in First Nation communities and to raise awareness regarding the services, resources and programs that they offer.

Activities and events honouring the theme will take place in many communities and libraries throughout the week. This year’s provincial launch will be hosted by the Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation on Monday, September 30th. The event opens the week-long celebration with a variety of community activities and presentations.

“We’re honoured to be hosting the launch this year” said Beverly Bressette, Library Coordinator. “FNPLW is an important avenue for promoting our library annually when we highlight new programs, services, and resources. We gratefully acknowledge the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport for enabling us to grow and develop as an important part of our First Nation.”
