Nigig Power Corporation signs agreement to own and operate Henvey Inlet Wind project
HENVEY INLET FIRST NATION – Nigig Power Corporation (wholly owned by Henvey Inlet First Nation) has signed an agreement with Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern Development) to work jointly with Henvey Inlet First Nation to develop, own and operate the 300 Megawatt Henvey Inlet Wind project. The project has a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) for all of the power generated. Nigig Power Corporation owns 50% of the project.
Henvey Inlet First Nation Chief Wayne McQuabbie is very excited and proud of the project. He said, “This wind farm will be our contribution to a greener Ontario and pave the way for other First Nations, because this is the largest First Nation renewable energy project in the country.”
Ken Noble, President and CEO, Nigig Power Corporation said, “We aren’t building a wind farm, we are building an economy, as the net proceeds of this project will do just that over the 20 year term. Since the 1850 Robinson Huron Treaties, we have witnessed the decline of traditional economies. This project represents an economic turning point where we can create a prosperous future, and inheritance for our future generations.”
“We’re honored to partner with Henvey Inlet First Nation in Ontario on this exciting new project, which will take advantage of the strong and steady winds blowing across the Georgian Bay,” said Mike Garland, CEO of Pattern Development. “This will be our eighth wind project in Canada and the largest on-reserve wind project to date, creating local jobs and providing a significant new source of revenue for the First Nation.”
