What is an Environmental Farm Plan?

The Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) is an assessment voluntarily prepared by farm families to increase their environmental awareness in up to 23 different areas on their farm.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture developed the EFP. Through the EFP local workshop process, farmers highlight their farm’s environmental strengths, identify areas of environmental concern, and set realistic action plans with timetables to improve environmental conditions. The EFP can be used in conjunction with cost-share programs to begin implementing their action plans.

Completion of an Environmental Farm Plan is mandatory for many of the cost-share programs under the Canadian Agricultural Program. The plan looks at various topics such as soil, the potential for surface and groundwater contamination, the well, storage of chemicals and fertilizers, management of farm wastes, your sewage system, storage of manure, disposal of livestock mortalities, water and energy efficiency, pest management, wetlands and floodplains, woodlands and wildlife, and a variety of other topics.

You can prepare your Environmental Farm Plan through an in-person two-day workshop that is recommended if you have never completed a plan. Alternately, you can prepare a plan electronically.
