Nipissing First Nation one of 37 clean water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure improvement projects for First Nations

NORTH BAY (March 25, 2021) —Canadians everywhere are feeling the impact of COVID-19, on their families, their livelihoods and their way of life. Together, Canada, Ontario and First Nations are working to reduce the impact of the pandemic, ensure health and safety, rebuild businesses, and promote job creation, growth, and investment.

37 First Nations across Ontario are receiving funding for clean water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure improvements, including Nipissing First Nation who is receiving $2,187,878 for a VLA Water Plant Replacement.

“Nipissing First Nation is grateful for the funding provided by this program, which will help us address significant issues with the pump house and water quality in our Veterans’ Lane community,” says Nipissing First Nation Chief Scott McLeod. “A recent water feasibility study determined that the pumphouse needs to be replaced with a full water treatment system. Following this study, we identified a new well to service the community and are appreciative of this substantial investment in our nation’s infrastructure needs. This funding will cover the majority of the cost of these needed enhancements that will result in better supply and quality of the water our residents and businesses receive. Miigwech.”

“I am pleased to see this investment in Nipissing First Nation to ensure a safe drinking water and process wastewater,” says Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming. “We need to continue to build healthy and resilient First Nation communities by partnering with them on long-term investments and key projects. When it comes to water and wastewater systems, these investments are very important as they will provide safe and quality drinking water to all residents, help protect the environment, and support community development.”

The Government of Canada is investing more than $69.5 million in these projects through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan. The Government of Ontario is providing more than $16.9 million. The 37 communities are contributing a combined total of $5.8 million toward their respective projects.

Additional investments in First Nation water and wastewater management projects include; replacement of drinking water pipes, upgrades to communal drinking water systems, sewage system rehabilitations, wastewater treatment plant upgrades and replacements, well upgrades, subsurface septic system rehabilitation, stormwater management and water storage and distribution system upgrades.
