Ramara Township officially transfers five roads to the Chippewas of Rama First Nation

RAMARA (January 2, 2024) – The Township of Ramara has officially transferred the ownership of Fish Sideroad, Benson Sideroad, Willison Sideroad, Williams Road, and Victoria Park Road to the Chippewas of Rama First Nation.

Chippewas of Rama First Nation initiated the transfer after receiving a grant from the Provincial government to upgrade the identified roads; however, Chippewas of Rama could only proceed with the upgrades once the ownership changed.

“Since the beginning of this undefined process, we have been committed to working collaboratively with our Indigenous neighbours,” states Mayor of Ramara Basil Clarke. “No legislation deters or outlines the process for transferring roads to a First Nation entity; however, Ramara worked diligently with our legal counsel and Rama’s to define a process and create this unprecedented mark in history. I am honoured to work with the Council and staff at Rama First Nation to benefit both communities mutually.”

In September 2021, Ramara Township and Chippewas of Rama co-hosted a public forum event for residents affected by the road transfer. This process allowed the public to ask questions and address any concerns that they may have. Since then, township staff have been working to complete all planning, zoning, and legal changes to ensure the transfer of the roads is seamless to all communities affected.

“Ramara Township and Rama First Nation have entered into a new era of partnership which will prove beneficial for both communities,” said Chippewas of Rama First Nation Chief Ted Williams. “Users can expect the same quality of service and commitment.”

The upgrades to the five roads are as follows:
1. The upgrade to Fish Sideroad will allow the road to handle increased residential travel traffic and improve traffic use.
2. The upgrade to the intersection of Benson Sideroad and Fish Sideroad will improve sight lines and drainage.
3. Upgrading Willison Sideroad, Williams Road, and Victoria Park Road will improve local traffic use.

Ramara residents who live on any of these three roads will still be required to follow all planning, building and other legislated policies and procedures. All service standards, such as winter maintenance, will continue to be maintained.
