Location: Anishinabek Nation Head Office, Nipissing First Nation OR Curve Lake First Nation Satellite Office OR Fort William First Nation Satellite Office OR Thunder Bay Satellite Office OR Garden River First Nation Satellite Office OR Sudbury Satellite Office
2 Year Contract Position with Possibility of Extension and Benefits
(after successfully completing 3 months of employment)
Salary Range: $62,373 to $70,690
Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, the Community Outreach Coordinator will play a critical role in enhancing the capacity of Anishinabek Nation communities to respond to, prevent, and mitigate the psychosocial impacts of social emergencies. The position’s primary objective is to provide essential administrative, logistical, and coordination support while assisting in building awareness around the psychosocial dimensions of social emergencies.
The Community Outreach Coordinator will assist the Emergency Management Team in empowering Anishinabek Nations to develop locally and regionally tailored strategies to enhance resilience, support mental and emotional well-being, and promote effective recovery. It focuses on supporting Anishinabek communities in building their capacity to address psychosocial challenges before, during, and after social emergencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Degree or Diploma in Emergency Management, Public Safety, Social Work, Public Health, Indigenous Studies, or a related field;
• Previous experience in emergency management and/or a related field, working in a First Nation setting;
• Certification in emergency management (e.g., CEM, EMAP) or additional training in mental health, trauma-informed care, or emergency/project management is an asset;
• Experience in grant writing or securing funding for emergency management initiatives is an asset;
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and relevant computer systems, programs and software) and able to learn new technologies and tools; and
• Valid Ontario driver’s license and be insurable.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders;
• Possess research and analytical skills;
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines;
• Possess the skills to develop briefing notes and technical summaries;
• Strong team player with a positive attitude and a proactive approach to problem-solving with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team;
• Familiarity with Ontario’s emergency management policies, programs, and federal and provincial legislation affecting First Nations;
• Ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin or willingness to learn; and
• Knowledge of governance systems and the unique challenges First Nation communities face in emergency management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide administrative assistance to the Emergency Management Team, including scheduling meetings, coordinating events, and preparing documents;
• Assist in coordinating community outreach engagements, training sessions, workshops, and exercises to enhance local emergency response capabilities and ensure community preparedness;
• Apply cultural sensitivity when assisting with outreach efforts, ensuring respect for Anishinabek traditions, culture and practices in all community interactions;
• Assist in securing funding and resources for emergency preparedness and response activities in partnership with provincial and federal agencies;
• Assist in preparing reports and presentations and circulating other materials needed for community outreach and educational programs;
• Inquiring, collaborating and gathering information and data on trending Emergency Management needs of communities; and
• Performing all other duties as assigned.
