2 Year Contract Position with Possibility of Extension and Benefits
(after successfully completing 3 months of employment)
Salary Range: $65,750 to $74,516
Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, the Community Outreach Lead will play a critical role in enhancing the capacity of Anishinabek Nation communities to respond to, prevent, and mitigate the psychosocial impacts of social emergencies. The position’s primary objective is to build education and awareness around the psychosocial dimensions of social emergencies, empowering Anishinabek Nations to develop locally and regionally tailored strategies to enhance resilience, support mental and emotional well-being, and promote effective recovery.
As the Community Outreach Lead you will play a pivotal role in supporting First Nation communities through the process of creating comprehensive emergency management plans that reflect local needs, values, and cultural traditions. You will be instrumental in supporting First Nation communities to build resilience, healing, and long-term psychosocial well-being in the face of social emergencies.
This position requires a blend of knowledge in emergency management, mental health, community engagement, and Indigenous cultural practices. It focuses on supporting Anishinabek communities in building their capacity to address psychosocial challenges before, during, and after social emergencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Degree or Diploma in Emergency Management, Public Safety, Social Work, Public Health, Indigenous Studies, or a related field;
• Minimum of two years of experience in emergency management or a related field, while having worked in a First Nation setting;
• Certification in emergency management (e.g., CEM, EMAP) is an asset;
• Knowledge of federal and provincial government policies, processes, agencies, and funding opportunities relating to Social Emergency Management is an asset;
• Experience in grant writing or securing funding for emergency management initiatives is an asset;
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and relevant computer systems, programs, and software) and able to learn new technologies and tools; and
• Valid Ontario driver’s license and be insurable.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Excellent interpersonal, leadership and problem-solving skills;
• Possess research and analytical skills;
• Excellent facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop tools and resources that are accessible and relevant to the communities served;
• Strong organizational and project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives;
• Possess the skills to develop briefing notes, technical summaries, strategies, and implementation measures;
• Exhibit professional attitudes and behaviour;
• Ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin or willingness to learn; and
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, governance systems, and the unique challenges faced by First Nation communities in emergency management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coordinating community outreach engagements, training sessions, workshops, and exercises to enhance local emergency response capabilities and ensure community preparedness;
• Assisting in securing funding and resources for emergency preparedness and response activities in partnership with provincial and federal agencies;
• Collaborating with community leadership, stakeholders, and local emergency services to identify risks, hazards, and resource needs specific to each community;
• Supporting the development of training programs, drills, and simulations to ensure community readiness and capacity building in emergency response;
• Keeping up-to-date with research on the psychosocial impacts of social emergencies, sharing best practices, emerging trends, and innovative strategies with First Nation communities; and
• Performing all other duties as assigned.
