Communications Officer 

WORKSITE LOCATIONOnsite at the Union of Ontario Indians Head Office (Nipissing First Nation), Sudbury Satellite Office, Fort William First Nation Satellite Office, OR Thunder Bay Satellite Office  

Full-time Position with Benefits, including a defined contribution pension plan starting day one and employer-paid group insurance following three months of employment, in accordance with plan terms.

Salary Range$59,811 to $67,786 

The Communications Officer is responsible for media relations, public education, and overall communications support for the Union of Ontario Indians secretariat, and for working within policy parameters and administrative guidelines. This position reports to the Communications Director and plays a key role in overall external communications for the Union of Ontario Indians. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum two years’ experience with media relations, communications, or public relations; 
  • Degree or Diploma in communications or journalism; 
  • Working knowledge of editing, writing, media and public relations, graphic design, marketing, and social media; 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and Canva with the ability to learn new technologies and tools; and 
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License, be insurable under the organization’s vehicle insurance policy, and be willing and able to travel regularly for work-related events, meetings, and other duties as required.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all situations;

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in all work; 
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities; 
  • Willingness to adapt to changing priorities or work environments; 
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and support events and outreach activities; 
  • Proficiency in using social media platforms for communication and outreach; 
  • Ability to navigate office environments and use standard office equipment; and; 
  • Ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin, or willingness to learn. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Supporting communications planning and development, and delivery of organization messages to intended target audiences; 
  • Supporting media relations, including editing news releases, media advisories, and statements; and responding to media inquiries; 
  • Public Relations activities that create an awareness of the organization (i.e., representation at community events); 
  • Supporting programs and directors in all aspects of communications (writing, editing, research, planning, and information dissemination); 
  • Supporting the Political Office and Anishinabek Nation leadership, internally and on behalf of Anishinabek Nation member First Nations; 
  • Designing and producing graphics, materials and content for digital, print, and interactive media promoting the organization;  
  • Supporting the Anishinabek News with editing assistance and writing as required;    
  • Supporting the Communications Department; and 
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
