Contract: This is a 6-month part-time contract position (20 hours per week). As a temporary part-time position, it is not eligible for participation in the organization’s group benefits or pension plan.

The Anishinaabemowin/Language Plan Project Lead is responsible for engaging Anishinabek First Nation members’ leadership, E’Dbendaagzijig/citizens and self-governing bodies to produce a 5-year language revitalization plan to guide projects activities and resources and a communications strategy. This position reports to the Anishinaabemowin E-niigaanziik’ki-dang, Language Manager.  

The Chi-Naaknigewin forms the traditional government of the Anishinabek Nation. It legislates Anishinaabemowin as the official language of the Anishinabek Nation (English is a secondary language). The Anishinabek Nation asserts that it has a sacred duty to ensure the well-being of the peoples to the 7th generation, part of that sacred duty is to stabilize, revitalize, reclaim, and preserve Anishinaabemowin. In 2023, the Anishinaabemowin Department was established to support Anishinaabemowin/Language reclamation, preservation and revitalization.  

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum two years’ experience in First Nation language revitalization and planning; 
  • Degree or Diploma in First Nation language revitalization and planning and/or Anishinaabemowin/Lenape/Algonquin;  
  • Working knowledge of First Nation language revitalization, language planning, wise/successful strategies and/or Anishinaabemowin/Lenape/Algonquin; 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Zoom and relevant programs and software, with the ability to learn new technologies and tools; and  
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License, be insurable under the organization’s vehicle insurance policy, and be willing and able to travel regularly for work-related events, meetings, and other duties as required.

  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with First Nations, community members, partners, and stakeholders through both virtual and in-person engagement; 
  • Effective analytical and research skills; 
  • Comfortable engaging with the public and presenting information to groups; 
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all situations; 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines; 
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in all work; 
  • Strong time management and self-motivation skills with the ability to manage competing priorities with minimal supervision; 
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and support events and outreach activities; and 
  • Ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin, or willingness to learn. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Plan, coordinate and facilitate virtual regional engagement sessions for First Nations, leadership, citizens, and language stakeholders; 
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with the Kinoomaadziwin Education Body (KEB), B’Maakonigan and other language collectives to support language planning initiatives; 
  • Maintain project plans, documentation, records and reporting to support effective project management and accountability reporting materials; 
  • Implement and support data collection activities, including the online Anishinaabemowin Survey and updates to the language scan; 
  • Support the recruitment and coordination of a consultant to gather, analyze, and summarize data from the Anishinaabemowin Survey (2024 and 2026) and the 2021 and 2026 Census (if available); 
  • Develop a Community Assessment Profile for the 39 Anishinabek First Nations using engagement findings, survey results, and available data; 
  • Engage Anishinaabemowin Department staff, Enkiitmajig Wii-aabiziitoong Anishinaabemowin, Language Revitalization Committee (EWA) and Governance Director on the preliminary review and finalization of the Community Assessment Profile; 
  • Facilitate the review and refinement of the Community Assessment Profile with Anishinaabemowin Department staff, Enkiitmajig Wii-aabiziitoong Anishinaabemowin (EWA), the Language Revitalization Committee, and the Governance Director; 
  • Develop a five-year language revitalization plan that includes a vision, goals, activities, timeframes and evaluation identifying key networks, capacity supports and partnerships; 
  • Engage Anishinaabemowin Department staff, Enkiitmajig Wii-aabiziitoong Anishinaabemowin, Language Revitalization Committee (EWA), and Governance Director on the preliminary review and refinement of the five-year Language Revitalization plan; 
  • Coordinate stakeholder feedback, review, and finalization of the five-year Language Revitalization Plan; 
  • Collaborate with the Anishinaabemowin Department to develop and implement a communications strategy that promotes awareness and engagement with the five-year language plan; and  
  • Other duties as assigned.
