Anishinaabay View
Anishinaabay laws are still here on Anishinaabay land. The elder Anishinaabayg that still know the language they know, they still remember what happened in the past. .They gave their children, along time ago, these elders, what happened during the negotiations. They gave them who was there sitting over there, who smoked the tobacco before the law was passed.
This Treaty 9 still remains here in Ansihinaabay thought, it is still here in the Anishinaabay language, it is still here, what was said a long time ago here on Anishinaabay wilderness, here on Anishinaabay land.
A long time ago the English sailed here. They came ashore, they stuck their flag into the ground and their cross. This made them thought that they owned the new land. They told their leaders Anishinaabayg owned this land. Their leaders wrote the Doctrine of Discovery. This English written law said to take the Anishinaabay land. And that is why now it is still used here on Anishinaabay land.
Strangers saw here on Anishinaabay land that nobody owned it. They called it; “terra nullius,” “no man’s land.” That is why today it is photographed in Treaty 9, it is seen that way. No one is seen as living in the wilderness. The picture says that no one is living there.
It is thought that no one is there on the Anishinaabay wilderness.
We still own the northern land.
We still look after the northern land.
We still look after the animals.
We still look after the medicine in a good way.
We still look after the water in a good manner.
It is still beautiful, the Anishinaabay land, in the north.
The truth is in the Anishinaabay language.
Let us be true again.
Again let us speak Anishinaabay.
Again let us be Anishinaabayg.
We will own again Anishinaabay way of being.
