Celebrating First Nation culture in Sarnia-Lambton

SARNIA (September 8, 2022) – Tecumseh Community Development Corporation in partnership with Tourism Sarnia-Lambton are excited to announce the First Nations Cultural Tourism event on Saturday, October 1, 2022. This free family event is open to everyone and will take place from 10:00am to 3:00pm at Maawn Doosh Gumig Aamjiwnaang Community Centre, 1972 Virgil Ave., Sarnia, Ont.  This event will celebrate and recognize our First Nation peoples, rich culture, important heritage, and honoured traditions.

Lambton County is part of the ancestral land of the Chippewa, Odewa, and Potawatomi peoples referred to collectively as Anishinaabeg. The County also encompasses the three First Nations of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point, and Walpole Island Bkejwanong Territory.

“This family-friendly event will highlight many important First Nations traditions including drumming, singing, cuisine served by the food vendors, 30 talented Artisans with arts and crafts, and skilled dancers of varied ages wearing brilliantly coloured regalia,” said Phyllis George, General Manager, Tecumseh Community Development Corporation. “We are thrilled to have the Brothers Wilde Music perform their unique sound of a Country Fried-Roots Rock mix of music at the event.”

Additionally, TJ Stables will bring two special guests, a pair of Anishinabe Ojibwe Spirit Horses. Today, there are only 120 Ojibwe horses still in existence. It is believed that some of the Ojibwe horses are descendants of wild horses that members of the Walpole Island First Nations gathered when hunting in the region. Everyone will have an opportunity to meet these rare horses and learn about their rich history through storytelling.

“This exciting event will celebrate First Nations in a festive and fun way where the whole family can enjoy and learn throughout the days activities,” said Beverley Horodyski, Product Development Coordinator, Tourism Sarnia-Lambton. “It’s a great opportunity to welcome everyone by sharing the rich heritage and culture through music, dance, food, art and it’s happening right here in Sarnia-Lambton.”

The kid zone promises lots of fun for the whole family with face painting, sweet treats, photo booth and great door prizes to be won.

See up-close the works of talented artisans weave baskets, create beautiful bead work, braid sweetgrass, make moccasins, and sample a taste of the popular fry bread.

Mark your calendar and come and enjoy a full day of rich culture, entertainment, food and displays.
