SUMMARY

The Tribunal and Circle Coordinator’s role will be to organize all aspects of tribunal and circle gatherings, including location/facility details, scheduling all participants and ensuring all relevant documents are provided as required. The Coordinator will be required to liaise with both internal staff, and external service providers and agencies as may be necessary in the planning of tribunals and circles. The Coordinator will also be responsible for ensuring the proper recording of events transpiring during tribunal and/or circle, as well as the delivery of accurate correspondence to legal as required and within required timelines.

The Tribunal and Circle Coordinator will be responsible for creating relevant training and materials for tribunal and circle participants, and ensure the timely facilitation of that training as needed. They will function within legislative requirements, regulations, policies and procedures, and the vision, mission and values of Nigig.

The Coordinator will also support the role of Tribunal and Circle Administrator, as their direct supervisor.

This is a full-time, remote position, with some requirement to work on-site as may be required in the planning of tribunals/circles. The role requires the employee to operate under tight deadlines, while maintaining a high degree of quality of service.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. General
  • Follow the Seven Grandfather teachings as it relates to Nigig and its vision, mission and values.
  • Be exceptionally familiar with the child and family well-being law of Pikwakangan, Nigig Nibi Ki-win, acting in accordance with this in all activities.
  • Coordinate all parties involved in either tribunals and/or circles as required.
  • In conjunction with the Tribunal and Circle Coordinator, will assist in the successful facilitation of each function, as may be required.
  • Maintain a roster of those able, willing and qualified to participate in such events.
  • Attend and participate in Algonquin Anishinaabe cultural training and/or activities provided by Nigig and/or AoPFN as able in the administration of their role.
  • Engage in learning and incorporating Anishinaabemowin language within the position.

 

  1. Community Support
  • Assist Nigig Gamik in connecting with Anishinaabe Elders, knowledge keepers and other resources both in Pikwakangan and other First Nations to support the function of active tribunal and circles roles.
  • Maintaining a list of available and qualified participants.
  • Communicating with Pikwakanagan membership both in and out of community, sharing and promoting accurate information on the purpose and process of tribunals and circles, as outlined in the law.
  • Engages in intercommunity relations, fostering connections and collaborations with other Indigenous communities, organizations, and stakeholders, and represent both Pikwakanagan and Nigig’s interests and values in external engagements.

 

  1. Leadership and Advocacy
  • Advocate for members of Pikwakanagan, ensuring they are aware of their inherent rights to culture, tradition and community.
  • Serves as an advocate within the Algonquin territory, representing the best interests of children, youth and families.
  • In collaboration with Management, puts forward recommendations with respect to processes and policy as it may coincide with tribunal/circle practices.

 

  1. Mediation and Conflict Resolution
  • Will utilize traditional conflict resolution methods and cultural protocols to promote harmony and reconciliation during the facilitation of tribunals/circles as may be necessary from time to time.

 

  1. Organizational Development
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of training for tribunal/circle participants, including both staff and external resources.
  • Responsible for the training of new staff in appropriate policy and/or protocols within these functions.
  • Responsible for the creations of internal and external policy on the facilitation of these functions, including standard operating procedures for the role(s).
  • Responsible for the streamlining of processes within this area.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed for Nigig on an on-call and as-needed basis based on a request approved by Nigig management. Work involves contact with clients, families, community membership. Work involves handling and dealing with issues of a very sensitive and confidential nature.  Work potentially involves travel and working a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

With the Child Well-being Service Director or designate:

Receives direction with respect to Nigig policy and process; Collaborative relationship with all managers with respect to departmental needs; Guidance on program and service requirements.

With other staff:

Be a courteous and cooperative, a neutral party in all groups.  

With Governmental Ministries and Agencies:

Represents and promotes the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation through Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik; Maintains proper reporting relationships; Maintains awareness of all relevant policies and program changes.

With the public:

Represents and promotes the interests of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation through Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik; Works in a courteous, cooperative, respectful, positive, and proactive manner; Provides information using judgment and following the policies of Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik; Provides assistance when required.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be a recognized member of Pikwakanagan/Algonquin community.
  • Have an understanding of the social work field, particularly with respect to child well-being.
  • Have 2-3 years of experience in event planning and coordination.
  • Have an understanding of the current challenges faced by Algonquins both within the community and territory.
  • Knowledge of Algonquin culture, traditions and practices.
  • Knowledge of local, regional, and provincial Indigenous and non-Indigenous services.
  • Being certified in First Aid and CPR is preferred.
  • Provide a clear Police Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Screening.
