Employment Status: Full-Time
Location: Sudbury, ON (with option to work from Henvey Inlet Office) and travel to member communities
Reports To: Executive Director

Waabnoong Bemjiwang Association of First Nations (WBAFN) is a Tribal Council serving member First Nations in Northeastern Ontario. We support our communities through technical advisory services in areas including housing, infrastructure, environment, and community development.

Position Overview 

WBAFN is seeking a motivated and organized Waste Management Coordinator to lead and support waste reduction, recycling, composting, and solid waste initiatives across our member communities. 

This position works closely with community staff, leadership, partners, and funders to improve waste diversion, promote environmental stewardship, and ensure programs are delivered effectively and in compliance with regulations. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Plan, implement, and monitor waste management, recycling, composting, and waste reduction programs 
  • Coordinate pilot projects and new initiatives 
  • Support communities in identifying waste management needs and practical solutions 
  • Develop and deliver education and outreach materials 
  • Provide training and ongoing technical support 
  • Track program participation, diversion data, and outcomes 
  • Prepare reports for leadership, funders, and partners 
  • Conduct waste audits and maintain program records 
  • Liaise with funding agencies, municipalities, and service providers 
  • Assist with grant applications and funding reports 
  • Promote safe handling of waste materials and equipment 
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations 
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and community events 


Qualifications & Experience
 

  • Post-secondary education in environmental studies, waste management, public works, or a related field, or equivalent experience 
  • Experience coordinating programs or projects, preferably in environmental or community-based settings 
  • Knowledge of recycling, composting, and waste diversion principles 
  • Strong organizational, communication, and report-writing skills 
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) 
  • Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle 
  • Willingness to travel to member communities 
  • Ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with First Nations communities 
  • Criminal record check may be required
