FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER
Summary
The Family Support Worker will support parents and caregivers to raise children in culturally-appropriate safe and healthy environments, service referrals, and programming with Traditional and Western practices.
Under the supervision of the Social Services Director, the Family Support Worker will plan, coordinate, and implement culturally enriched programs and non-traditional approaches of well-being through prevention and awareness-education.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Support to the Social Services team with providing prevention programs to support parents and caregivers to raise children in culturally appropriate safe and healthy environments.
- Collect Data on the number of children in care and the services provided to families
- Advocate for Dokis First Nation Children and families in Child and Family Service Agencies.
- Help link children to their home community
- Provide referrals or link to services and programs
- Provide and/or assist children and families in receiving support and resources through traditional and/or western ways in their city/town/First Nation of residence.
- Provide programming on individual healthy well-being for children, youth and families through both Traditional and Western practices.
- Complete or assist families with post-majority and Jordan’s Principle applications.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending education workshops, viewing publications and establishing personal networks
- Monitors all projects and activities, ensuring all information is documented and that files are maintained
- Assist with protocols with Niijannsinaanik Child and Family Services and other external Child and Family Services.
- Work towards repatriation of children residing in care in other jurisdictions
- Maintain the program budget by monitoring expenditures and monthly financial reporting
- Assist other program staff coordinate and conduct community workshops
- Participates in regular staff meetings and workshops
- Provides the Social Services Director with monthly and annual reports and develops workplans.
- Must be flexible and be prepared to work evenings/weekends as per activities scheduled or as directed by management.
- Must be able to travel for work related purposes, training, conferences, workshops etc. that support the development of the Family Support program.
- Must be able to maintain a professional level of “confidentiality” according to the Dokis First Nation policies/procedures
Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge
- Completion of college or university program in a social work or social-related discipline.
- Minimum of one-year related work experience within an Indigenous Organization/Community.
- Able to interpret legislation and legal documents.
- Excellent communication skills, including written and verbal in order to be effective in negotiation, advocacy, facilitation and collection and dissemination of information
- Must have advanced computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, Outlook, Internet, Adobe Acrobat Pro, etc…
- Program planning skills essential. Workshop facilitation and public speaking as asset.
- Knowledge of Indigenous language, culture, traditions and customs
- Must have access to reliable transportation.
- Must provide Vulnerable Sector Check
- Must have a valid CPR and First-Aid, or willing to obtain.
