ALDERVILLE FN – Chief JimBob Marsden’s bluegrass band, SweetGrass, has been named the “Promising Group for 2014” by the Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards.
SweetGrass was among more than thirty bluegrass ensembles to perform at the awards event held at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario, November 21-23, 2014. In its 36th year, the Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards show draws several hundred bluegrass pickers, singers, and fans from across Ontario and guest bands from the United States.
SweetGrass took centre stage on the afternoon of Nov. 22, performing original and cover tunes, including a “grassified” version of Alberta Bound. The band is known for its fresh takes on old tunes and for taking new tunes and giving them a bluegrass sway. Add SweetGrass’ upbeat stage presence, solid musicianship and obvious love of bluegrass music and you have a group that is fun and well-respected by fans and musicians alike. The award winners in each category are decided by votes cast by members of bluegrass associations across Ontario.
“We’re getting known and getting gigs but mostly it’s about getting to play together and share what we love with audiences like this one that will drive through snow and sleet in late November for the love of live bluegrass music,” said Marsden. “We are very happy to receive this award from our fans and peers. It means a lot to us to be recognized in this way.”
Last year, SweetGrass’ superb vocalist, Ginny McIlmoyle was nominated for best in her field. This year the band won the Promising Group award. Then there’s next year… The 2014 award had immediate benefits, with bookings confirmed on the spot by festival organizers on the look-out for outstanding acts for their annual bluegrass events.
The SweetGrass Band consists of JimBob Marsden on bass and vocals, Ginny Mcilmoyle on guitar and vocals, and Mike Del Mastro on mandolin and vocals. “Dr Al Kirby has taken time off so the band welcomes John Partridge on banjo. Adrian Donnelly retired a few years ago due to health problems. We wish them both well,” said Marsden, in his remarks upon accepting the award.
In the early years during the 60s and 70s, Marsden played Soul, Rhythm & Blues and Classic Rock. Growing up his family always played music and his father taught him to strum along to Five Foot Two, Bill Bailey, Just Molly and Me and so many other classics of that era. He found his roots in Country music during the 80′s. In 2009 he brought together a group of friends for a gig and they have been together ever since.
The Sweetgrass Band’s second and latest CD, “An Autumn Evening in Keene Village” is now available from any band member. For Bookings please contact Jim Bob at 905 352 2423 or 905 375 5331 or send them a note at www.sweetgrasser.com.
