Madahbee wins for third consecutive term
CURVE LAKE FIRST NATION (June 3, 2015) — Patrick Wedaseh Madahbee won his third consecutive term as Grand Council Chief of the Anishinabek Nation.
Candidates Chief Lyle Sayers of Garden River First Nation and Madahbee of Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation participated in a stand-up election today at Grand Council Assembly in Curve Lake. Madahbee had 32 votes to Sayers’ 10.
It’s actually Madahbee’s fourth term as Grand Council Chief — he served the position in the 1980s as well.
“I’ve never forgotten who I serve,” says Madahbee in his speech prior to the election. Madahbee’s priorities continue moving the Anishinabek Education Agreement forward, along with the Anishinabek Nation Child Well-Being Law.
“I think we are coming upon an exciting time,” says Madahbee. “We have a meeting set up with Premier Wynne at the end of August, we’re advancing our priorities and exercising our inherent jurisdiction.”
Yesterday, Deputy Grand Council Chief Glen Hare was acclaimed for a fourth term.
